How will the emerging uses of generative artificial intelligence (GenAI) impact how we work, live, play, and learn?
Background
Generative Artificial Intelligence (GenAI) is a type of AI that creates new text, images, videos, or other content, often in response to prompts. The input of existing information is used to train GenAI. GenAI then pulls from that existing information in order to perform the task given in the prompt.
Our World Solutions Challenges relate to core problems in the rapidly evolving field of Artificial Intelligence (AI). The 2024 virtual competition event topic was GenAI. Learn more
Context
GenAI advancements have become a part of many industries. GenAI content is used in many fields, including software development, education, gaming, healthcare, finance, entertainment, customer service, sales and marketing, art, writing, fashion, and product design.
As an emerging technology, however, many issues have arisen. GenAI models often are trained using biased information, and some prompts result in false information, unrealistic images, or videos that show inhuman movement. There is no consensus on who owns content created using GenAI: the company that owns the GenAI model, the creator whose material was used to train the model, the person who entered the prompt, or all of them. It’s important to keep the information used by AI models and the content they create safe. AI companies work to balance protecting people’s privacy and respecting ownership of ideas and creations.
GenAI can be employed in the workplace, schools, and our personal lives. As these systems become more capable, many industries may be transformed by GenAI. Companies in many fields use GenAI to enhance their operations and decrease employee workload. However, it has also resulted in job loss.
Questions
- Are images, music, film, stories, and other forms of art produced by GenAI “real” art?
- How might GenAI change the daily lives of workers in the future?
- How is GenAI changing how people interact with the world around them?
- In what ways could GenAI impact students and researchers?
- Who is responsible for the information and content GenAI produces?
- What skills will be less important for the average person in a world with more GenAI? More important?
