How might we preserve, protect, or safeguard historical knowledge, sites, structures, records, and artefacts in the future?
Background
Often, history has complex realities to share and learn from. Throughout history, artifacts have been displaced into collections and marketplaces, with their significance and historical value often lost. Historical buildings are torn down to make way for urban expansion and new developments. Even designated UNESCO World Heritage Sites are threatened and sometimes destroyed. Despite these threats, conservators, restorers, historians, librarians, and community leaders fight to keep history alive. New technology, such as mixed reality, 3D laser scanning, and artificial intelligence could transform our ability to understand historical artifacts.
